Best Quick Charge 3.0 USB Type C Car Charger

CELERITY Quick Charge 3.0 Dual USB Type C Car ChargerThis is an excellent, fairly small Quick Charge 3.0 car charger. (It actually fit in a 12V charge port inside a console with a cover where another similar product from another manufacturer did not.) It seems to operate perfectly, and quick charged my new HTC 10 just fine. It has the Quick Charge 3.0 charge port, as well as an additional port that can charge at up to 2.4 amps.

The only minor quibble I have with this charger is the light on it, which is on at all times. I prefer to leave the charger plugged in constantly, so this light is a little annoying, and also at least a small waste of power. (Yes, I realize the power wasted is probably trivial.) This was not an important enough negative, though, for me to deduct a star from my rating.

I also want to make sure, in writing this review, that people reading it understand what Quick Charge 3.0 is and isn’t. Because from reading some of the other reviews, it is pretty clear that there are a lot of misconceptions.

Only a very few devices out there right now take advantage of the Quick Charge 3.0 standard. You can find a list of them, as of May 24, on Qualcomm’s site.

There are ten devices on that list. (More devices are being added to the list all the time, of course. For example, my phone–the HTC 10, which is a Quick Charge 3.0 device–was not on the last list, which was dated in early April, as the list came out before the HTC 10 did.)

That list from Qualcomm also shows which devices can take advantage of Quick Charge 2.0, a standard this charger can also provide. There are a lot more of those devices on the list. (I counted seventy-five.)

Here’s the point: every one of those Quick Charge devices is an Android smart phone or tablet. Apple devices are not Quick Charge devices! That’s not to say this charger won’t do a great job of charging your Apple devices. It certainly will. It just isn’t going to charge them any faster than any other charger capable of supplying 2.4 Amps (for Apple devices that can accept 2.4 Amps – some can’t accept that much.)

If you’ve been using a 1.0 Amp charger to charge your iPhone 6s or your iPad, and you switch to this charger, then sure, your phone or iPad will charge much faster than it used to charge. But that has nothing to do with the Quick Charge technology, and everything to do with the increased amps this charger is providing your phone.

I apologize if you are one of the people reading this review thinking, “Yeah, I already knew this stuff”, but I really felt the need to explain it, because from reading other reviews it is very clear there is a lot of confusion about this. I certainly want people to purchase this car charger if it is the right car charger for them, and if they are buying it for the right reasons. I just don’t want to see someone who is already charging their Apple devices with a 2.4 Amp charger buying this one because of the Quick Charge 3.0 in the description, thinking it is going to charge their Apple devices faster, because it just isn’t going to do that.
